Stakeholders: Old Hyde Park Historic District, Historic Kansas City, MAC Properties

Historic Kansas City partnered with Old Hyde Park to oppose the demolition of four apartment buildings in the Old Hype Park Historic District. They were built in 1902-1903 and designed by famed Kansas City architect John McKecknie. After months of community engagement, meetings with stakeholders and testimony presented to the Historic Preservation Commission on September 27th 2013, the commission voted unanimously to reject MAC Property’s application to demolish based on economic hardship. The buildings were in a 3 year waiting period before any demolition permit could be issued and Historic Kansas City continued to work with stakeholders to ensure a positive outcome for the neighborhood and buildings.

HKC’s efforts paved the way for success after the owner/developer, Mac Properties, brought forward a plan for rehabilitation that was approved by the City Council. Construction will begin in the spring of 2016 and the buildings will be available for tenants in early 2017. Thank you to the City Council, Old Hyde Park Historic District and especially Mac Properties for collaborating to find a solution!
