Urban Explorers: Baltimore Place
Event Sponsors: Historic Kansas City
Don’t miss this opportunity to see a true one of a kind in Kansas City – Baltimore Place. This exclusive apartment dwelling built in 1914 boasted many modern amenities for its time, and today exudes luxurious character of times past.
Baltimore Place was built in 1914 in the fashionable affluent neighborhood known as Hyde Park (now referred to as Old Hyde Park). The neighborhood was developed on farmland adjacent to the town of Westport. Baltimore Place was part of the multi-unit wave of construction post 1910 to accommodate a growing population. The building is a rare example of the grandest of multi-unit apartment houses of that era. Each luxury apartment boasts over 2300 square feet of living space, more than double the typical apartment of the time. Occupants enjoyed luxuries such as formal entries, 10’ ceilings, marble and tile bathrooms, architectural details, large kitchens and maid’s quarters. Very few units have been compromised and tour participants will get a glimpse into the lives of past residents, which included business visionaries, artists and other notable citizens of the era.
